Project 5-100 universities feature in the U.S. News & World Report Rankings

Almost all Russian universities ranked by U.S. News & World Report have improved their positions, according to the recent Best Global Universities rankings. These universities have also increased their presence in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities subject rankings.

In its fifth edition, the rankings evaluate 1,250 schools, providing comprehensive assessment of research universities around the world. Institutions have been ranked based on 13 indicators that measure universities’ academic research performance and their global and regional reputations. Russia is represented in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities rankings by 14 institutions, 12 of them are Project 5-100 participants.

The overall U.S. News & World Report places 4 Russian universities – MSU, MEPhi (419 th), NSU (433 d), MIPT (460th) – in the top half of the world’s elite institutions across 75 countries. MSU (275th) is Russia’s leader in the Best Global Universities rankings.

Almost all of the ranked Project 5-100 universities have improved their positions this year, including TSU (+129 positions), ITMO University (+125 positions), NUST MISiS (+98 positions), TPU (+66 positions), SPbPU (+62 positions), UNN (+62 positions) and HSE (+61 position). The biggest Project 5-100 riser is KFU (+165 positions). In addition, U.S. News & World Report ranks Russian universities in 13 of its 22 Best Global Universities Subject Rankings. With 13 universities in the list of the Best Global Universities for physics, this particular area shines as the subject with the most Russian representatives. It is followed by chemistry with 7 Russian institutions, while both mathematics and materials science have 5 universities from this country.

While in 2015, Project 5-100 universities were named among the Best Global Universities for physics only, then U.S. News ranked Project 5-100 participants in the 4 subject areas in 2016, in 6 subject areas at 2017. This year leading universities got included in seven subject rankings.

Two of the Project 5-100 participants are ranked among the top 100 in the world for physics by U.S. News: NSU ( 75th ) and MEPhI (76th ). MIPT also scored high in this particular subject area featuring at 106thposition. Top 200 for Physics includes SPbPU (195th).

Three of the Project 5-100 universities are also listed in the top 200 for mathematics: HSE (107th), NSU and MIPT (166th). MIPT has made it to the ranking for the first time. KFU got its 133th spot in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Subject Rankings: Space Science, entering this ranking for the first time.

Meanwhile, the following Project 5-100 universities' areas of study are also ranked in the U.S. News & World Report Subject Rankings: Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, Social Sciences And Public Health.

Project 5-100 participants have improved their results in to the QS World University Rankings, ARWU, and THE World University Rankings this year.
