Project 5-100 universities take three top-100 places in latest Global Ranking of Academic Subjects

ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2018 spans over 4000 universities across the globe. It contains rankings of universities in 54 subjects across 5 fields: Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences.

Russia has 17 universities represented in 2018’s prestigious subject tables, up from 12 institutions last year. The rankings also include 6 first-time entrants.

This year’s rankings demonstrate that Russia’s major strengths remain in Physics (7 ranked universities), Mathematics (5 ranked universities) and Instruments Science & Technology (5 ranked universities).

The country’s universities further strengthen international collaborations and partnerships, which boost global reputation and research influence that is vital for ascending these important rankings. Russian universities demonstrate healthy results in Mining & Mineral Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Earth Sciences, Atmospheric Science, Energy Science & Engineering and Chemical Engineering. 

Lomonosov Moscow State University is ranked more times than any other university in Russia. It is ranked for 17 subjects. 

In 2017, Russia was home to 5 universities in the top 100 of the global tables. This year, 6 institutions feature in the top 100. In total, Russian universities take top-100 places in 6 subject tables – Mathematics, Physics, Automation & Control, Mining & Mineral Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering and Sociology.

This year Project 5-100 universities retain their status as the most represented Russia’s institutions with 11 universities ranked : Higher School of Economics, Novosibirsk State University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Tomsk State University, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Lobachevsky University, ITMO University, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, National University of Science & Technology MISIS, Tomsk Polytechnic University, Ural Federal University, up from 8 institutions in 2017 - with 3 first-time entrants, leading to increased national, regional and international competition.

The analysis reveals Higher School of Economics, National University of Science & Technology MISIS and Novosibirsk State University as the top-performing Project 5-100 universities when it comes to their places in the list of the world's top 100 institutions across 3 fields: Natural Sciences, Engineering and Social sciences. 

While Project 5-100 has three institutions in the top 100, it claims five spots across the top 100 in total. Novosibirsk State University shares the 76-100 bracket in Mining & Mineral Engineering with National University of Science & Technology MISIS. Higher School of Economics is ranked for the two subjects, making the 76-100 band in Mathematics and the 57-75 band in Sociology. National University of Science & Technology MISIS is also placed 76-100th in Metallurgical Engineering. 

Three universities participating in the Project 5-100 now make ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects for the first time. Lobachevsky University makes the 301-400 band in Atmospheric Science, Ural Federal University is 151-200th in Metallurgical Engineering, and ITMO University is 201-300th in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, 301-400th in Materials Science & Engineering and 401-500th in Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
