Project 5-100 participates in the IV Moscow International Education Fair (MIEF)

On April 12, 2017, the IV Moscow international salon of education began its work at VDNKH, which is held annually under the patronage of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. Project 5-100 participates in this educational fair for the third time, presenting twenty-one leading Russian universities at the booth. This year the main MIEF theme was a new education ecosystem.

Representatives of Project 5-100 participants take an active part in MIEF eventful program.

On the opening day TSU rector Eduard Galazhinsky, UrFU rector Victor Koksharov and MISiS rector Alevtina Chernikova were speakers in the discussion "Universities as centers of the space for creating innovations: challenges and prospects", talking about new innovation scenarios and criteria for developing models of university centers for regional development.

There was the session "International Educational Programs of Project 5-100 participants" on the second day of MIEF, organized by the Project Office. Specialists of the international cooperation departments of Project 5-100 participants shared their experience in developing, launching and running international training programs in their universities. The discussion gathered a full house: university representatives showed great interest in the internationalization of Russian higher education.

Olga Maslennikova, Director of the Center for Joint Educational Programs of TSU, talked about the goals of developing international educational programs in her university, highlighting their importance not only to attract foreign students, but also to improve the quality of their students' education. Among the basic requirements for international programs, the speaker distinguished the following: the development of the program in partnership with a foreign university, running the program in English by staff experienced in foreign teaching, exchange opportunities for students and teachers, the design of an individual study path and internships in companies.

Irina Sukovataya, the head of the Department of International Educational Programs of the SFU, supported the thesis of the colleague that the university needs to develop international educational programs, primarily for the sake of its own students, most of them do not have the opportunity to go abroad and study at a foreign university. According to her, during the development of international programs in SFU, they have shifted focus to the student-centered approach in teaching: instead of starting from the opportunities of English-speaking teachers to provide a course, the university decided to build on the students' requests and the potential demand of the international labor market. That is why the programs were developed not simply by translating existing programs into English, but from scratch, using the power of the strongest research teams of the university.

Oksana Chernenko, the next speaker, Director of Educational Innovation of HSE, shared the experience of founding the International Summer University HSE, which is run in various campuses in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod. Its features are the opportunity to obtain ECTS credits and a wide range of available courses, from Russian language to philosophy and mathematics. According to the speaker, the Summer University is becoming popular, allowing to solve the most important goals of the university such as increasing international recognition, introducing university to foreign students and its main programs.

The session was concluded by Irina Obukhova, Deputy Director of the Center for International Education of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). In her opinion, programs of international class were traditionally implemented in PhysTech due to top professors, leading world-class research projects and involved in international cooperation. As the speaker emphasized, on the current agenda of the university is increasing recruitment of foreign students in the technical professions, much inferior to the popularity of the humanities, and they are often insufficiently trained. The university is addressing these challenges by adapting curricula and introducing a system of supplementary courses, helping to improve the skills of foreign students in the core subjects to a high MIPT standard.

The experts underlined the great impact of the program "Internationalization of Higher Education in the 21st Century", which was implemented by the Project Office 5-100, on the design and development of international educational programs in the universities of Project 5-100. Within the framework of this program, representatives of universities were given the opportunity to learn from experience of internationalization in leading universities in the US and Europe, get an advice from recognized experts and organize inter-university internationalization teams. As Irina Sukovataya noticed, the experience of non-English-speaking countries (Netherlands, Italy and Germany) was especially helpful for the participants of the program.

The moderator of the session was Zoya Zaitseva, Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia of QS Ltd. As a representative of one of the world's largest rating agencies, she gave an expert evaluation of the changes that occurred in the system of higher education in Russia, pointing to the positive dynamics in strengthening the position of the English language as the Communication Language of the global academic community. Zoya Zaitseva also highlighted the directions that the Russian university should pay special attention to, including the program updates, acceleration of promoting scientific results and demonstration of graduates’ career development.

As the largest education forum in Russia, MIEF unites all participants of the educational process: CEOs and educators, representatives of federal and regional ministries and departments, NGOs and companies as well as main clients of education services - schoolchildren, students, and their parents. Last year MIEF hosted more than 54 000 visitors and specialists from 70 countries took part in the business program.
