Russian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets reviewed interim results of Project 5-100 at the General Meeting of Global Universities Association held at Higher School of Economics on October 19. Olga Vasilyeva, Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, emphasized the importance of disseminating the experience of Project 5-100 participants to other universities.

Our results, particularly in subject rankings, are quite strong. Our universities are getting stronger in both subject and institution rankings. This demonstrates significant progress and recognition of Russian institutions,” said Golodets and noted the improvements posted by Project 5-100 participants in many other respects. “The number of publications, particularly in Web of Science, has changed considerably. Up 2.5 times, they now account for 40% of all publications of Russian state universities. We started from 5.7 and now stand at 14.4”.

Olga Golodets accentuated the progress made by Project 5-100 universities in terms of the number of foreign students. “Their ranks grew by 60% and now account for 13% of the total cohort of foreign students at Russian state universities. There are objective and subjective challenges involved here. We are aware of the impact of the political situation and visa regimes, so the current status is a major achievement, particularly for the universities that launched new dedicated programs,” stressed Mrs. Golodets.

Olga Vasilyeva, Minister of Education and Science, emphasized the importance of disseminating the experience of Project 5-100 participants to other universities: “Starting from early 2017, we are planning a series of visits to universities in order to see how they implement and coordinate new education programs, how they manage research and project partnerships”. She pointed out that Project 5-100 is a key priority for the development of Russian education in line with the decision of Prime Minister Medvedev. “It is not the scores, but the tools and mechanisms which underlie them, that we consider absolutely essential,” said Mrs. Vasilyeva and added that the Project would continue.
