2021 ARWU Methodology of Academic Subjects
Universities are ranked in 54 subject areas within such scientific fields as natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. The number of universities included in the published part of the ranking depends on the subject area. In order to be included in the subject ranking, a university shall have a minimum number of scientific publications for the period of 2015 to 2019. Publications in different disciplines have different thresholds. The source of bibliometric data is the Web of Science database and the InCites analytical platform. The categories of the Web of Science database correspond to the 54 subject areas of ARWU. When compiling the rating, five objective indicators are used in the relevant subjects:
Q1 - the productivity of the scientific activity, the quality of research;
CNCI - Citation Index;
IC - International Cooperation;
TOP - number of publications in the best magazines;
AWARD - number of employees who have received prestigious awards in the specific area. This information is based on the ShanghaiRanking Academic Excellence Survey.
More than 1,000 professors from 95 leading universities that represent 17 countries or regions, participated in the survey.
