Project 5-100 Universities joined the University Consortium of the World OceanNovember 10, 2020
The rectors of the Far Eastern Federal University, the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University and the Sevastopol State University have agreed to create a world-class consortium for the study of the World Ocean and coastal zones. The agreement was signed in the presence of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Valery Falkov.
Speaking at the panel discussion of the forum, the minister emphasized that the creation of consortia to achieve ambitious goals and increasing research potential are one of the key priorities for universities. “The Consortium is a tool, a goal - to unite the efforts of academic institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences, universities and, of course, business. Although, first of all, we are talking about the unification of the higher education system and the system of research and development, ”added Valery Falkov.
The priority areas of the consortium will be the implementation of joint educational programs, network research projects and expeditions. A special focus of cooperation between universities is aimed at supporting talented youth and creating conditions for the realization of their creative and scientific potential.
Both Project 5-100 universities have accumulated extensive experience in the study of the oceans. For example, scientists of the Basic Department of Ocean Geography of the Baltic Federal University are actively conducting research on the World Ocean, as well as training specialists in the field of marine nature management. The direct access of the Far Eastern University to the seas of the Pacific and Arctic oceans allows the university to use its scientific potential to solve problems in the natural sciences, engineering and medical fields.
FEFU conducts research in a complex of areas, including the creation of technologies for the study and production of hydrocarbons and mineral resources; marine biotechnology, development of marine engineering structures, monitoring of anthropogenic factors of ocean change. “The creation of the consortium is an important step in building scientific collaboration with colleagues from other regions for complex interaction and exchange of experience in the study of the ocean and its resources.
“In the future, we look forward to joining the Consortium with other leading universities and research centers, ” - stressed FEFU Rector Nikita Anisimov. “The created consortium will become a new step for our university in the development of its own scientific potential and will help create a powerful research center for the study of the World Ocean with partner universities in Russia,” noted the rector of the IKBFU. I. Kant Alexander Fedorov.
