Four Project 5-100 Universities Earn Slot in THE Arts and Humanities Rankings
October 2, 2019
UK-based Times Higher Education (THE) has released the latest edition of its Arts and Humanities Rankings.
The league table lists the world's best universities for education in the arts, including performing arts, design, languages, literature, linguistics, history, philosophy, theology, architecture and archeology.
Six Russian universities feature in the rankings, with four of them participating in Project 5-100. The latter group is led by National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) which has this year made the top 200. It has significantly improved its standings, advancing from the 201-250 to the 176-200 band.
Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) and Kazan Federal University (KFU) have found their way into the top 300, ending up in 201-250th and 251-300th place, respectively.
Sitting within the 301-400 range, Ural Federal University (UrFU) is a newcomer to the rankings.
The other two Russian universities listed are Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), which, in 72nd place, remains this country's best performer, and Saint Petersburg University (SPbU) that holds 201-250th position.
To compile its Arts and Humanities Rankings, THE uses the same 13 performance metrics as for its overall university standings but adjusts their weightings to reflect the specifics of the subject area. These indicators fall into five broad categories: teaching (learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer).
